A New Era has Begun

Many Christians have heard of Lent, but do they all understand what it entails? Lent is defined as "the 40 weekdays from Ash Wednesday to Easter observed as a period of penitence and fasting by the Roman Catholic, Eastern, and some Protestant churches."

Lent is intended to be a period of repentance. That is not a sense of shame, but rather an awareness of how sin separates us from God and what it cost Him to be reconciled with us. “Shame has its place, but feeling shame over sin is not the same as repentance from sin,” because “our tempter can turn our obedience to God into a source of pride.”

As a non-Catholic, my observation during Lenten season, Catholic people attend mass, giving their best to seek God’s kingdom, even if we are in the midst of this pandemic.  They also attend the called “Ash Wednesday” during February 17, as a start of the Lenten Season.  On Ash Wednesday, a priest gathers ashes and rubs them on people's foreheads to symbolize "we are dust, and to dust we shall return." However, due to the COVID-19 pandemic, everyone should follow proper health protocols such as social distancing and the use of facemasks and face shields. To rub the ash without touching each other, they placed the ash on top of their heads. Only a few people are inside the church to reduce the risk of contracting the virus. Masses are broadcasted on radio and television in order for everyone to participate.

Regardless of the challenges that people face during this time, their faith will never fail to seek God's assistance. And as we face these trials, we remain united and continue to pray and trust in God's plan for his sons and daughters. And as the sunrise our faith and love will also rise from within. Let's continue to pray and God's mercy and grace will guide us in every path we take.
