Heroic Heroes
The Philippines was attacked by Japanese forces, bringing the conflict full circle and potentially leading to the fall of Bataan. This day also commemorates the infamous Death March, in which approximately 76,000 Filipino, American, and Chinese officers were forced to walk 90 miles) from Bataan to Camp O'Donnell in Capas, Tarlac by the Japanese. The climb was genuinely exhausting for the Filipino, American, and Chinese officers – thousands died as a result of starvation, dehydration, weariness, and mistreatment by their captors
Araw ng Kagitingan will never be equal to the bravery of those who have come and fought against us recently. The call to valor is for every Filipino to understand who we are, what we have been capable of in the past, what values we value most today, and what we must do to protect them always.
As we celebrate Araw ng Kagitingan, let us remember the sacrifices of Filipinos who fought for everyone's freedom. So, let us not take our current freedom for granted, because it has come at a high cost in terms of human lives.
